The Walkabout Portable Gait MonitorTM (WPGM) is a light-weight belt, consisting of three, tri-axially arranged, accelerometers applied to the lumbar region of the spine. It measures the user's acceleration in x, y and z directions and records data at 200 Hz for a maximum of 20 seconds, enabling collection of approximately 20 strides (at a stride frequency of 1 Hz), and 4000 samples.
The accelerations collected from the WPGM are converted, through integration, (by the Gaitview TM software), to velocities and displacements in the three-coordinate system and can be plotted versus time. Gait characteristics such as stride frequency, envelope, surge, lurch and functional leg length discrepancy can be measured before and after surgery and they can be compared to asymptomatic patient data. This data can be used to evaluate the ability of orthopaedic interventions to improve or restore joint kinematics.
