Mr. Munro founded HALIFAX BIOMEDICAL INC. in October 2004 bringing experience
in management, medical device manufacturing, medical device development and
product development methodologies, IP evaluation and protection strategies,
as well as a Masters in Biomedical Engineering focusing on Roentgen Stereophotogrammetric
Analysis of Orthopedic implants. As President and CEO of HALIFAX BIOMEDICAL INC. Mr. Munro covers many roles including company operations, customer relations,
and also oversees development, IP protection, and contract research.
Mr. Munro graduated from the Technical University of Nova Scotia in 1998 in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in Biomedical Engineering. He then worked as a product development engineer for three years at Synthes-Stratec Inc., a leading International Orthopaedics company, located in Switzerland. At Synthes, Mr. Munro's focus was in the application of QFD in product development, production optimization, and patent analysis and development. Mr. Munro
completed four international PCT patent applications as the primary inventor during his time with Synthes.
In 2002, he returned to Dalhousie University to attain a Masters of Science in Biomedical Engineering. His thesis focused on improving the surgical instrumentation, analysis technique, and kinematics descriptor for Roentgen Stereophotogrammetric Analysis (RSA), a stereo imaging x-ray technique. After completing his MSc. degree in October 2004, Mr. Munro began working as a biomedical engineering consultant, establishing HALIFAX BIOMEDICAL INC. in
October 2004.
Irving Schwartz is a noted community leader and philanthropist. His first career took off in 1955 when he became the President and General Manager of Schwartz and Company. Within the next 30 years, the company grew to include five outlets across Canada. In the 1960s, he branched out into long-term care opening his first nursing home in Sydney Nova Scotia and this operation grew to nine nursing homes across the country and controlled the Park Plaza Hotel, in downtown Toronto. In 1979, Mr. Schwartz formed Cape Breton's first cable company and later in 1985 became the sole owner. Building on his success, Mr. Schwartz mentored and supported a number of entrepreneurs and businesses in Nova Scotia including a bakery in Halifax, a travel agency in Glace Bay and a cheesecake factory in Point Edward among others. In 2003 he was inducted into the Nova Scotia Business Hall of Fame.
Schwartz is a co-founder of the charitable, non-government organization called Canadian International Demining Corps (CIDC). CIDC is supportive of an international ban on the production, stockpiling, and deployment of anti-personnel landmines. In recognition for this work Mr. Schwartz was inducted into the Order of Canada.
Mr. Marchand was formerly Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Zelos where he was was one of the Company's founders. Prior to founding Zelos, Mr. Marchand served as Manager of Business Development and Administration at the Institute for Biological Sciences, part of Canada's prestigious National Research Council (NRC). Prior to his involvement with NRC, he was Secretary-Treasurer and Director of Finance for the Canadian subsidiary of Richardson-Merrell and the Vicks Chemical Company. Mr. Marchand has also held positions in marketing and business development for a line of consumer products, served as a Corporate Comptroller for Canada Bread, a publicly traded food manufacturer, and as Plant Comptroller - a divisional Chief Financial Officer position - in a large chemical processing plant.
Mr. Marchand was awarded a Bachelor of Commerce degree with a Major in Accounting from St. Mary's University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
In addition to Mr. Munro and Mr. Schwartz, the board includes the following outside directors
Carol Snider retired from BMO Bank of Montreal in February 2007. At that time she held the position of Senior Vice President, Personal and Commercial Banking, Ontario Division. Prior to that she was the Bank's most senior executive in Atlantic Canada. With her appointment to that position in March 1995, she became the first woman to hold the post of a Divisional Senior Vice-President at BMO Bank of Montreal.
A native of Toronto, Ontario, Carol Snider's career in finance spans over 34 years. She is a Chartered Accountant by profession and received her MBA from York University. She joined the Bank of Montreal in 1984 after a career in two major chartered accounting firms, Deloitte Touche and Ernst & Young and as a Professor in the Commerce Faculty at University of Toronto. Her responsibilities at BMO Bank of Montreal included a number of senior management positions in the Bank's financial management functions as well as in personal and commercial banking.
Throughout her career, Ms. Snider has played an active role in the community, serving on many different boards. She chaired the Board of the Nova Scotia Community College for five years during a major developmental stage for the college. She also chaired the HealthAction Committee for the Metropolitan Halifax Chamber of Commerce. The Halifax Cornwallis Chapter of the Progress Club awarded her the Women of Excellence award in the Corporate Management and Professions category, The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nova Scotia elected her as a Fellow of the Institute, and she was selected as one of the Top 50 CEO's in Atlantic Canada.
Carol is a Director of Medavie Blue Cross, serving on their Investment and Audit / Risk Management Committees. She chairs the Board of HALIFAX BIOMEDICAL INC., a contract research company. In addition she is assisting the Nova Scotia Community College Foundation with their first major fund raising endeavour.
Mr Orr has managed the startup, financing and growth of Ocean Nutrition Canada
since 1997. He has 20 years senior management and executive experience in the
Marine Biotech, Natural Products, Food Retailing, Advertising and Wholesaling
industries and has helped make Ocean Nutrition Canada the fast-growing marine
biotechnology and natural products ingredients company it has become. Robert
Orr has also taken part in the creation and management of several startup companies
and has been responsible for large multinational corporate division operations.
Roberts experience has allowed him to get together a sizeable team of highly
accomplished, multidisciplinary individuals which has been a major factor in
the growth of Ocean Nutrition Canada.
David Horton was educated in the United Kingdom and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland. Prior to arriving in Canada in 1981, he spent seventeen years working in various professional and management capacities in Africa, Europe and the USA. In Canada he has held senior management positions in commerce and industry as well as with a charity engaged in international humanitarian relief. Mr. Horton's industrial experience includes aviation, commercial fishing, engineering and ship repair, petroleum distribution and retailing, and telecommunications. He was appointed a director of HALIFAX BIOMEDICAL INC. in November 2007.
